There are several different window lock faults that can occur. A handle may feel loose, the key may stop turning, the handle might not move, or the window might appear to close normally but not actually engage the locking points.

In some cases the problem is with the mechanism inside the window and sometimes the fault is with the window handle itself.

Window Handle Repairs and Replacement

Window handles receive a lot of use and are one of the more common parts to fail.

A handle may become stiff, loose or spin without operating the lock mechanism. It might also refuse to turn fully, or snap off completely. Sometimes the handle itself needs replacing. In other cases, the handle is fine but the mechanism it operates has failed.

We can replace faulty window handles where required and check that the locking system is operating correctly afterwards.

This can also be useful if you have recently moved into a property and some of the windows have damaged, missing or poorly functioning handles.

Window Lock Mechanisms

Modern uPVC windows commonly use an espag locking mechanism. When the handle is turned, a series of locking points around the edge of the window move into position and secure the sash against the frame.

These mechanisms can become worn over time. Dirt, corrosion, movement in the window or repeated use over a long period of time can all contribute to problems.

A handle can sometimes appear to be the fault when the actual problem is further inside the mechanism. Replacing just the handle in this situation will not necessarily solve the problem.

We can check the operation of the mechanism and, where suitable, replace faulty parts so the window can once again open, close and lock properly.

Extra Window Security

We can fit a range of additional window security devices depending on the type of window and the level of protection required.

Sash jammers

Sash jammers provide an additional physical barrier against a window being forced open. They are particularly useful on windows where an extra layer of security is needed such as on ground floor windows.

They can be fitted to the majority of uPVC windows and are available in different colours and designs.

Window restrictors

Window restrictors limit how far a window can be opened.

They are useful where you want ventilation without allowing the window to open fully. They can also be useful on upstairs windows, rental properties and areas where restricting the opening is desirable for safety or security reasons.

The appropriate type depends on the window and how it is being used.

Additional window locks

Some windows can also be fitted with additional locks to supplement the original locking system. This can be worthwhile on older wooden and aluminium windows or where the existing lock setup does not provide the level of security you want.

Window Hinge Repairs

The hinges are another part of the window that can cause problems.

A window that has dropped, catches against the frame or does not sit squarely when closed may have a problem with its hinges or the way the window is sitting in the frame.

We can inspect the hinges and associated fittings and advise whether they can be repaired or need replacing.

Getting the window sitting correctly is important because a poorly aligned sash can put unnecessary strain on the locking mechanism and make the handle increasingly difficult to operate.

Locked or Faulty Windows

If a window has suddenly stopped working, avoid repeatedly forcing the handle. This can turn a relatively straightforward mechanism problem into a broken handle or damaged locking system.

Likewise, forcing a key that will not turn can damage the window lock further.
